According to the New York Times, a barista class program started in 2017 at the island’s women’s facility was such a hit that the New York City Department of Correction (Rikers Island) expanded it to include 18-to-24-year-olds and convicted adult men.

Questions:

  1. How long is the class?
  2. What is the purpose of the class?
  3. Each year in America, how many people are released from jail and how many are released from state or federal prisons?
  4. Do you think this will help prevent hiring discrimination? Why or why not?
